Enjoy a virtual tour of Surly Brewing’s Minnesota home with Head Brewer Ben Smith

November 11, 2020Keith Gribbins

Surly Brewing Co.’s Beer Hall, Beer Garden and Pizza Upstairs spot are closed indefinitely, so, sadly, the virtual tour above is as close as you’re going to get to visiting Surly’s beautiful Minneapolis destination brewery. In particular, Surly Brewing’s indefinite closing of its magnificent Beer Hall (look at this place) is a depressing bellwether of the pandemic and a big heartbreaker for any craft beer fan.

The Beer Hall closed Nov. 2 but not before temperately shutting down because an employee tested positive for COVID-19. At the same time, some Surly employees were looking to unionize.

Surly has not had an easy go of late, but let’s set all that aside for a second and enjoy Surly’s extremely awesome destination brewery. Think happy thoughts! Head Brewer Ben Smith gives us a 10-minute tour showing off 600-bbl fermenters, snazzy mill room, epic brew deck with kettle, whirlpool, lauter tun, giant packaging hall and (the most amazing part of the tour) the futuristic cellar. Smith is a great guide, teaching the brewing process along the way.

Hopefully, this walk-around keeps you excited about visiting Surly when it opens back up. Until then, grab some Surly beer on shelves and enjoy the tour.
