Market idea of the week: The Delaware-only 302 Beer Drinkers’ Choice Awards

March 16, 2022Chris Crowell

Crooked Hammock Brewery

Crooked Hammock Brewery announced the much-anticipated return of the 302 Beer Drinkers’ Choice Awards, which is said to be the first and only festival to feature every brewery in the Delaware. The 5th annual event (after its brief hiatus) will take place on Sunday, April 3 at the Crooked Hammock brewpub in Lewes, Del. Guests will be treated to samples from 30+ local Delaware-only breweries.

Cool enough idea on its own, but what we at CBB like best is the 302 Beer Drinkers Awards is not some stodgy beer judging event. It is a fun, irreverent event for the beer drinking community, with guests voting online to democratically pick winners of the people, by the people, for the people. And yes: costumes are strongly encouraged.

“Delaware’s brewery scene has exploded by leaps and bounds in recent years and we wanted to create a one-of-a-kind festival that promotes our shared commitment to the 302,” says Crooked Hammock owner Rich Garrahan. “Every single brewery in the state is welcome back; and we challenge those who haven’t reached out to get off the sidelines. Don’t be scared. It’s more about connecting with each other than winning or losing.”

Brewers and brewery representatives will march into the Crooked Hammock taproom to start the festivities in a ballyhooed “Parade of Breweries” like dashing wrestlers entering the ring. The transportive scene also pays homage to Delaware’s proud brewing history, one founded on collaboration and fun. That lively atmosphere also captures the Hammock State of Mind: creating escapes from the everyday, to better enjoy life.

The interactive process takes the power away from a stuffy panel of judges, the tried-and-true method for most festivals. This year’s winner will walk away with a ceremonial championship wrestling belt and a Golden Tap Handle to take home – and, of course, ultimate bragging rights for a full calendar year after weeks of playful trash-talking on social media.

Awards are handed out in the following categories: Fan Favorite Beer, Most Unique Beer, Best Brewery Costume, Best Drinkers Costume, Best Edible Necklace.

The list of participating breweries is constantly being updated so please check the Crooked Hammock website often for new additions. Wilmington Brew Works will be looking to defend their 2019 title up against the following competitors:
