Marketing idea of the week: Giving away Dry January lockers with no combination

For craft breweries, looming just beyond the jolly scene of families pounding Christmas Ales and winter warmers while opening presents, is that dreaded, barren, booze-less month now known as Dry January. The “dry” also applying to brewery bank accounts. But if you can’t beat Dry January with more beer sales, might as well join ’em. I guess?

Non-alcohol sales are already trending way up, no matter what monthly gimmick is being marketed. But why stop there? The folks at HOP WTR are really pushing the commitment to Dry January by launching the HOP LOCKR. Yes, with a HOP LOCKR, customers can resist temptation to imbibe by locking away their beer and booze until Feb. 1.

HOP WTR itself was created to help beer lovers and the sober curious alike indulge in the refreshing taste of hops without the alcohol, calories, carbs, sugar, or gluten. I, for one, do think it is tasty.

Why not just get any old locker or safe or door in your house to do the same thing? Well, 1) the HOP LOCKR also comes with free HOP WTR, of course. Anyone who hits this link and fills out the form has a chance to win a locker and a month’s supply of HOP WTR.

And 2) the HOP LOCKR will legit be locked until Feb. 1. On that day, HOP WTR will send the combination to unlock it.

“We know it can be hard to stick with Dry January goals and implement healthier lifestyle habits, especially after a season of holiday indulgence. However, in recent years, we’ve noticed that more people are looking to participate in Dry January and really want to prioritize a more well-balanced lifestyle,” said Jordan Bass, HOP WTR co-founder and CEO.

One last thing as part of this marketing gimmick: HOP LOCKR participants who share their Dry January journey with HOP WTR on Instagram and tag @hopwtr will also have the chance to receive even more gear to get them through the month and show off their commitment to staying dry.
