A craft beer powerhouse continues to assemble in the New England market. Barrel One Collective, formed late last year via the merger of Mass. Bay Brewing and Finestkind Brewing, has announced its latest acquisition: Greater Good Imperial Brewing Company, an all-imperial style beer brand.
Based in Worcester, Mass., Greater Good brings a distinct high-ABV identity to the Barrel One portfolio, which now includes 15 brands and nine brewery locations across four states. The addition marks the latest example of strategic alignment—not full consolidation—as more independent breweries look to scale, share infrastructure, and tap into new markets without abandoning their craft roots.
“Greater Good has carved out a distinct space in the craft world with its unapologetically big, flavorful beers and cult following in Central Mass.,” said Dan Kenary, CEO of Barrel One Collective. “Their team’s focus on quality, authenticity, innovation, and community perfectly aligns with our company values.”
Greater Good explains fit
Kenary, a Worcester native, called the acquisition a full-circle moment—and a strategic fit. The deal keeps Greater Good’s 15,000-sq-ft Worcester taproom and brewery fully operational, preserving its role as a creative hub for experimental releases, food pairings, and fan engagement.
“We’re proud to be joining a collective that understands what it means to stay true to your roots while still thinking big,” said Paul Wengender, Founder of Greater Good. “This union powers our ability to pursue new growth opportunities while continuing to deliver the balanced, drinkable imperial beers our fans expect.”
Another bold move in an evolving craft landscape
This is Barrel One’s third major announcement since forming in December 2024 and reflects a growing national trend: craft collectives that combine resources, distribution, and branding power while still preserving local flavor and independence. It follows other recent stories like the formation of B3 Beverage Company and the Blake’s–Benchmark partnership—examples of craft adapting to market realities with scale-minded flexibility.
“The integration will expand the reach of our award-winning liquids and help us double down on culture and connectivity within the craft beer community,” said JT Ethier, Site Head and Business Director at Greater Good.
Greater Good’s portfolio includes Pulp Daddy, Greylock, Giant Pumpkin, and Good Night Moon, with all beers clocking in at 8% ABV or higher. The brewery has built a loyal following for beers that defy the session trend—and the backing of Barrel One is set to amplify that reach across the Northeast and beyond.
What Barrel One is building
With Harpoon, Long Trail, UFO, Smuttynose, and now Greater Good under its umbrella, Barrel One is positioning itself as a high-visibility player in the evolving craft ecosystem, especially in the crowded Northeast corridor. The collective’s portfolio spans traditional craft beer, fruit-forward beverages, RTDs, and even hard Italian ice, with national distribution and a stronghold in key regional markets.
“Greater Good will deepen our foothold in Massachusetts and bring strong, complementary products to our portfolio,” said Steve Kierstead, Chief Commercial Officer at Barrel One. “The company brings a fearless brewing ethos, commitment to excellence, and loyal fanbase that we’re excited to welcome into the family.”
The acquisition of Greater Good underscores what’s becoming increasingly clear: the next chapter of craft beer won’t be defined by single-brand dominance, but by smart, strategic partnerships between like-minded producers.
