CBB Interview: Open Door Brew’s Billy McDivitt on his main ownership challenge

October 25, 2017Chris Crowell

The power in craft beer lies not in its ever expanding number of businesses (5,600+ craft breweries right now), but in the ethos of each individual brewery. At this year’s Great American Beer Festival, we wandered around to get some quick insight from a few of these individuals.

Like many of the country’s less talked about craft breweries, Open Door Brew Co. is just trying to make quality beer and thrive in its corner of the world. And when that corner of the world is Longmont, Colo., you have to be on top of, if not ahead of, the craft beer trends.

Open Door hit the Longmont beer scene in 2016 (producing about 160 bbls with availability in 60 locations) and officially opened its taproom doors in March 2017 in a 1,500 square-foot space with a 175 seats and a rooftop patio.

We chatted with co-owner and COO Billy McDivitt at the Great American Beer Festival about those trends he’s seeing right now, plus the main challenge he’s experiencing as a small microbrewery. Just listen to how much the price of vanilla has affected his Over the Moon Vanilla Milk stout.
