How H2Plus helps craft brewers eliminate PFAS from their beer

PFAS are a growing problem for craft beer

A recent study by RTI International confirmed what many in the industry feared: PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are showing up in beer. The primary culprit? Municipal water sources used in the brewing process. These synthetic “forever chemicals” don’t break down naturally. They accumulate in the body and environment. Exposure has been linked to cancer, immune issues, and reproductive harm. Most filtration systems used by breweries don’t remove PFAS. Standard carbon filters and anion exchange units often trap the chemicals, but don’t eliminate them. Reverse osmosis works but is expensive and inefficient for smaller brewers. Craft brewers need better solutions.

H2Plus: A new approach to destroying PFAS

H2Plus offers a different kind of technology. Rather than filtering out PFAS, it destroys them completely — without creating any harmful byproducts. It works by diffusing a patented gas into contaminated water. As microscopic bubbles rise and burst, they release hydrated electrons. These electrons target and break the carbon-fluorine bonds — the chemical “glue” that holds PFAS molecules together. The result: PFAS are reduced to harmless compounds like water, carbon dioxide, calcium fluoride, and sulfate. No residual waste. No foamy concentrate. No secondary disposal needed.

The only tech that leaves beer drinkable

H2Plus says it’s the only PFAS destruction system confirmed to leave beer drinkable after treatment. This is a major breakthrough. Most PFAS removal technologies aren’t compatible with beverage production, especially for flavor-sensitive products like beer. For breweries, this means you can treat water without compromising quality.

Real-world results: mobile units, big gains

H2Plus module

H2Plus has already proven itself in high-contamination scenarios. In two pilot studies — one in Michigan, one in Tennessee — its mobile treatment system handled landfill leachate with extremely high PFAS levels. The technology reduced total PFAS by over 88%. Destruction rates for key compounds were even higher:

  • PFOA: 99.7%
  • PFOS: 96.6%
  • PFHxS: 99.1%
  • PFNA: 98.5%

Treated water met or exceeded safe drinking standards, with levels under 4 ng/L. The system operated at a lower cost than any other available technology — about $0.097 per gallon.

Why craft brewers should care

Water makes up more than 90% of beer. If your local water source contains PFAS, chances are your finished product does too. Even short-chain PFAS, which are harder to remove, pose a risk. H2Plus eliminates both long- and short-chain PFAS. The system is scalable for operations of all sizes, making it a strong fit for both small taprooms and regional brewers.

How breweries could use H2Plus

1. Mobile or fixed installation:
Breweries can use a mobile H2Plus unit or install a permanent system on-site.

2. Pre-treatment integration:
Add H2Plus before the brew kettle, treating municipal water before use in mashing or tank cleaning.

3. Scalable operations:
The base system handles 50 gallons per minute but can scale to over 100,000 gallons per day.

4. No need for chemicals or pre-treatment:
It’s a plug-and-play solution that doesn’t require chemical additives or extra filtration stages.

Cost, energy, and waste: minimal across the board

H2Plus uses about 96 kWh to process 84 gallons per minute — significantly less than competing technologies. It doesn’t create waste streams that need special disposal. Foam samples from pilot reactors showed 98% destruction of PFAS, meaning no chemical buildup. For brewers, this means fewer inputs, less waste, and lower energy bills.

RTI’s study showed that beers brewed in PFAS-affected regions had 15x higher odds of contamination. Some samples even exceeded EPA drinking water limits. As public concern grows and regulations tighten, breweries that act now can get ahead. H2Plus offers a solution that not only removes PFAS but restores trust — without compromising the beer.

Next steps for brewers
