Nectar Ales mixes hops with hemp

January 9, 2013Jason Morgan

After the high-profile legalization of marijuana in Colorado and Washington, the newly legal drug has seen a good amount of media attention. It’s a spotlight that has even touched the craft brewing industry, as the Pensacola News Journal recently highlighted Nectar Ales’ use of hemp seeds in its Hemp Ale.

As the PNJ.com blog pointed out – hops might be from the same family of plant, but the hops themselves, as brewers know, are not a narcotic. Nectar Ales, in association with Humboldt Brewing Co., decided to put these two organic brothers together through the use of hemp seeds. According to Nectar Ales, this adds an herbal, nutty flavor to the Hemp Ale.

It also adds availability restrictions. Hemp Ale is only available in California due to the legal restrictions of hemp seeds.
