Abita Brewing’s Barely & Hops sort of weird us out

February 26, 2013Keith Gribbins

Mischievous animal mascots have a long history in the world of marketing — from the cereal obsessed Trix Rabbit to those bad spelling Chick-fil-A cows. It was only a matter of time before anthropomorphic animal mascots invaded the craft brewing industry — we’re talking specifically about Barley & Hops — which do some video work for Abita Brewing Co. We think Barley is a squirrel and Hops is a chipmunk, but were not exactly sure. You can decide yourself by watching the video above.

It seems these two over-sized mammals have a serious drinking problem — especially when it comes to Pecan Harvest Ale (plugged in this video). They’re constantly stealing it, which makes sense, because it’s a pretty awesome beer and it’s made with real Louisiana roasted pecans. It’s a little weird though, but maybe that’s the point. It catches your attention. Tell us your thoughts in the comments below.
