Bottle spotlight: Tröegs’ 375-ml Belgian beer bottle with special cork bulb finish for its Mad Elf Grand Cru

November 18, 2021Keith Gribbins

Yes, grand.

Everyone’s always talking about cans, and yeah, cans are cool, but bottles carry a special occasion halo that not many canned beers can compete against. Imagine drinking a Mad Elf from Tröegs Independent Brewing out of a can. I mean you can, but that’s not for me. The legendary holiday ale helped put the Tröegs brand in the top tier of American craft beer, and its indulgent holiday experience (cherries, local honey, chocolate malt) feel more fitting for a bottle release. In today’s packaging spotlight, we’ll make a step up to the specialty Mad Elf Grand Cru version (tart Balaton cherries make all the difference) and its new smaller 375-ml Belgian glass beer bottles supplied by Ardagh Glass Packaging – North America, a business of Ardagh Group.

This is a new bottle format, and when launching its once-a-year specialty brew, Mad Elf Grand Cru, Tröegs wanted a high-quality glass bottle with a distinguished shape to help it stand out among crowded shelf space The Grand Cru was previously packaged in one 750-ml Belgian glass bottle, but is now available in four 375-ml Belgian glass bottles with a special cork bulb finish for the very first time. Now, that’s some celebration beer packaging I’d like to open. From the press release:

“We like to call Mad Elf Grand Cru the ‘director’s cut’ of our popular holiday beer Mad Elf,” said Chris Trogner, Tröegs Independent Brewing. “We add tart Balaton cherries to Grand Cru, and putting this beer in 4-packs of 375-ml bottles helps give it that extra special touch. We use the same bottles for beers like LaGrave and Jovial that we bottle condition, and we know the corks are great at keeping that extra pressure in. That means they’re also great at keeping oxygen out. For a beer like Grand Cru that people like to age, that’s a big plus.”

Mad Elf Grand Cru is the Director’s Cut of our legendary holiday ale. Tart Balaton cherries and flush with supporting notes of brown sugar, cinnamon & clove, this beer begs to be shared. Manufactured by Ardagh Glass Packaging – North America, the 375-ml Belgian glass bottles are made out of 100 percent and endlessly recyclable amber glass, produced right here in the United States. The 375-ml Belgian glass beer bottle is available for purchase in Ardagh’s stock catalog. To view Ardagh’s extensive glass beer bottle stock portfolio, which offers a variety of colors, sizes, styles and finishes all made in the U.S.A., visit ardaghgroup.com/beer2021.

“Glass bottles have an important role in protecting the integrity of our customers’ products, while helping shape a beer’s identity and creating an extra dimension for creativity and branding,” said John T Shaddox, Chief Commercial Officer for Ardagh Glass Packaging – North America. “Ardagh Glass Packaging enjoys collaborating with brands such as Tröegs to launch specialty beers in unique, sustainable glass bottles.”
