Do a deep dive into Founders Brewing’s Dark Penance

November 12, 2014Keith Gribbins

Founders Brewing Co.’s Dark Penance is as complex and heavy-handed as it sounds. Just take a quick look-see at the ingredients bill of this Imperial Black IPA. A heavy malt foundation includes Crystal malt for sweetness and just enough Midnight Wheat malt to push the color to black. The bitterness is huge, but balanced by malt sweetness and alcohol burn. The hop flavors and aromas range from citrus to floral to pine thanks to a delicious blend of hand-selected Chinook and Centennial hops.

Learn more by watching this Founders Brewing video with assistant head brewer David “Diamond” Deschaine. He introduces Dark Penance and discusses the ingredients used to create an Imperial Black IPA worthy of joining the Founders lineup. These guys always make great videos.
