Watch: Passing a sample through filter paper can clarify and degas beer and wort for measuring density

September 11, 2018Keith Gribbins

Earlier this year, we noted how much we enjoyed the excellent tech videos that the American Society of Brewing Chemists and the Brewers Association were making together. The only problem: There were only two videos. We reached out to the BA to see if more were being made, and they said yes. Now, a few more of these sciencey how-to videos have been released. The two brew associations are now collaborating on a series that demonstrates fundamental methods related to beer quality. Just watch Katie Fromuth, lab manager with the Fermentation Science and Technology program at Colorado State University. She recommends beer degassing methods and alternatives in the video above. She shows how passing a sample through filter paper can effectively clarify and degas beer and wort for measuring density with a hydrometer or density meter. We’ll post other videos as the week goes along.
