Ommegang goes with metallized label for old world redesign

Cooperstown, N.Y.-based Ommegang Brewery, which recently gained notoriety for a partnership deal it reached with HBO to release Game of Thrones-themed beers, has announced the makeover of its line of Belgium style ales.

To achieve the new look, Ommegang Brewery enlisted the help of Duffy & Partners for the redesign, Flower City Printing for their printing needs and AR Metallizing for the metallized paper labels. The goal was to create a cohesive look that would have brand recognition while sending a message of the superior quality of Belgium style ales.

Flower City Printing had toyed with different techniques to achieve the lustrous look Duffy & Partners had in mind for the labels. None of the techniques that were tried did exactly what Duffy & Partners. Flower City Printing then suggested metallized paper from AR Metallizing to support the pearlescent look desired. Playing with different ink draw – downs during the prototyping process – Flower City Printing achieved the luminous, pearly effect Ommegang Brewery and Duffy & Partners wanted for the new labels. This is meant to replicate the traditional old world look on craft beers.

“Using the metallized paper from AR Metallizing, made the final result we wanted that much easier because just by playing with opaque and transparent inks were we able to get elegant, beautiful labels that help visually evoke the quality that Ommegang Brewery is known for,” said Dana Jenkins, account executive, Flower City Printing.
