Check out Sierra Nevada’s new CO2 recovery system

February 8, 2017Chris Crowell

Pentair Haffmans recently supplied a new carbon dioxide (CO2) recovery system for Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.’s East Coast brewery in Mills River, N.C. The system, with a capacity of 700 kilograms per hour (kg/hr) delivers foodgrade CO2 that meets the highest quality standards.

At the beginning of the recovery process foam free gas is stored in a gas balloon, which — when full — will trigger the downstream process.

Located 15 miles south of Asheville, the Mills River site is Sierra Nevada’s second location utilizing a CO2 recovery system from Pentair Haffmans. The first system was installed in 2005, at Sierra Nevada’s brewery in Chico, Calif., where the brewer is based.

Pentair Haffmans’ CO2 recovery systems reclaim CO2 released during brewing fermentation for storage and use by the brewery. This recovery reduces greenhouse gas emissions and the need to purchase bulk CO2 from outside suppliers, which aligns perfectly with Sierra Nevada’s sustainability program.

After removal of the water soluble components (VOCs) in the Gas Washer, the gas is then compressed, deoderized and dried.

The Mills River CO2 recovery system by Pentair Haffmans was installed and commissioned in the fall of 2016. With 2015 revenues of $6.4 billion, Pentair employs approximately 28,000 people worldwide. Pentair Haffmans develops and supplies quality control equipment and carbon dioxide systems for the brewing, soft drink, wine, bioethanol, and biogas industries.
