Moving beyond Ballard: Reuben’s Brews aims to open a taproom on Fremont Ave. N in Seattle

September 5, 2023Keith Gribbins

Earlier this year, Reuben’s Brews was looking to sell its original 5-bbl brewery space in the heart of Ballard, Seattle, at 14th Avenue and 53rd Street. Adam and Grace Robbings opened Reuben’s Brews in August 2012, and the Ballard location was its original brewery and tasting room. Starting with five beers brewed and served in the space — non of them IPAs (see video above) — Reuben’s quickly became a well-respected brewery in Washington. During its peak usage from 2012-2017, the Ballard brewery won 160 awards, including 2014 Best Taproom in Washington by RateBeer and Brewery of the Year at the 2015 Washington Beer Awards. That’s pretty impressive. From the Reuben’s Brews blog:

“This brewery and taproom will always hold a special place in our hearts,” says [Adam] Robbings. “As our brand has outgrown the space, we’re looking to pass forward the successes it can offer to another brewery at the beginning of their story.”

More than 10 years later, Reuben’s Brews has its taproom on 14th Ave. NW, its barrel house on NW 51st St., and its canning line on NW 46th St. in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle. That virtual tour above gives a nice look at both the facilities and history of Reuben’s Brews, but now the company is moving beyond Ballard. Reuben’s Brews just announced a new taproom location at 4401 Fremont Ave. N in Seattle. Formerly a Vif Wine|CoffeeWork, the space is currently being updated, and an opening date will be announced in the weeks ahead. From the press release:

“We are beyond excited to introduce our new neighbors to the Reuben’s experience,” says cofounder Adam Robbings. “And we’re passionate about using Fremont Avenue as another place to build community and share our love of great beer — and great food!”

Drawing on more than a decade of experience in Ballard, the company plans to bring its same dedication to hospitality to the new space. The new taproom will feature more than a dozen taps, including a curated selection of the brewery’s everyday favorites and latest limited releases. In addition, Reuben’s Eats will serve an updated variety of delicious menu options. Open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., the Fremont Ave Taproom will offer cafe-style indoor seating, an outdoor patio area, a to-go store and parking on site. It’s also conveniently located near the 5, 16, 44, and E Seattle Transit bus lines.

“Fremont was one of the first neighborhoods we lived in after moving to Seattle, and it still holds a special place in our hearts,” says Grace Robbings, co-founder and head of the Reuben’s Brews Foundation. “Adam and I lived right down the street from this charming space for over 14 years, so when the chance came to expand Reuben’s Brews to this address, it felt like it was meant to be. And in the same way that we’ve forged connections with Ballard businesses and nonprofits, we look forward to building relationships with new community partners in Fremont.”

The opening of the new taproom at 4401 Fremont Ave N is another significant step in Reuben’s Brews journey. We’ll keep you updated.
