Learn about beer sensory characteristics, causes and control factors with this awesome Siebel Institute video series

May 2, 2022Keith Gribbins

The Siebel Institute of Technology is celebrating 150 years in brewing education in 2022 with some cool events — including a special alumni happy hour at the Craft Brewers Conference this week. Dr. John Ewald Siebel founded the Zymotechnic Institute in 1868. Today, Siebel Institute graduates span 60 countries. The organization has three actual campuses, including Montréal, Munich and its newly opened home base in Chicago (home of the World Brewing Academy program). The Siebel Institute also offers online education for varying levels of brewing (dig all the options right here).

The company has actually been doing online brewing training for more than 20 years, and the certificate you receive online is the same as the one you get on campus. Here’s an example from the school’s WBA Concise Course in Brewing Technology:

The on-campus option will allow students to participate in vibrant classroom discussions and develop close networks with fellow students. The online option, on the other hand, allows students to advance through the course at their own pace, from the comfort of their office or home, without the need to travel.

If the online option is selected, students will be supervised by the instructional staff of the World Brewing Academy [dig what this is here], and will be actively monitored throughout the course. Students can also access instructors via email and chat sessions throughout the duration of the module. The average time spent studying is normally 7-10 hours per week but depends on the individual as well.

To give students some, um, flavor for the types of quality content they will have access to, the Siebel Institute just uploaded a ton of overview videos on beer sensory characteristics, causes and control factors to its YouTube page. These little modules are great, ranging from sensory themes like papery, woody, earthy, vanilla and almonds to off-flavor tech terms like indole, isoamyl acetate, mercaptan and various acids from acetic to butyric (the latter described as baby vomit). I’ve embedded a few on this page, but definitely surf over to the Siebel Institute of Technology YouTube page to enjoy them all. Then, maybe check out these online courses.
