CBC 2018: Meet Dick Cantwell, other famous craft alum, get your books signed

May 1, 2018Keith Gribbins

The Craft Brewers Conference and BrewEXPO America is a pretty good opportunity to hobnob with famous beer folk. There’s a good chance you’ll see a Garrett Oliver-type on the show floor shopping. You’ll easily be able to enjoy presentations from bigwigs like Deborah Carey, founder and president of the New Glarus Brewing Co.; she’s helping give the state of the industry tomorrow. But a really good place to get up and personal with famous craft alum is the book signing area. Head to the BA Bookstore — Table B — from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today or tomorrow.

Some of the most well-respected and experienced craft brewers in the world will be signing books at CBC in Nashville this week. Dick Cantwell is the headliner. His new release from the Brewers Publications, Brewing Eclectic IPA: Pushing the Boundaries of India Pale Ale, explores the style’s evolution, provides guidance for designing unique beers and expounds on 25 original IPA recipes. From the press release:

“There’s no mistaking that we are living in the heyday of IPA,” declares Cantwell. “We’re enjoying a style of beer that would have been deemed undrinkable by its earlier 18th and 19th century consumers. Brewers are using a wide range of ingredients, from cocoa nibs, coffee, fruits, and vegetables, to spices, herbs, and even wood, to push the boundaries of the style.”

If you don’t know: Cantwell co-founded Elysian Brewing Co. in 1996, where he served as head brewer until its sale to Anheuser-Busch in 2015. He’s authored exactly one zillion beer articles and books. He’s also served as an international and national beer judge, as well as the Brewers Association’s Quality Ambassador, and he recently became the director of brewing operations at Magnolia Brewing in San Francisco. Not only can you meet the man, but you can also snag Brewing Eclectic IPA in advance of the presale on May 8. Score. But Cantwell’s only one suds celeb you can shake hands with. Here’s the lineup.
