Pennsylvania’s Sly Fox Brewing celebrates 22 years with new branding (dig all these revamped labels)

In early 2018, Sly Fox Brewing Co. will continue as one of Pennsylvania’s original craft brewing pioneers but expanding its independent culture via new branding. Founded by Dr. John Giannopoulos in 1995, Sly Fox Brewing has craft-brewed in the Keystone State for 22 years. It’s been at the forefront of technology and innovation starting with their bold decision to install a canning line in 2006, making them the first craft brewery to adopt cans in the Mid-Atlantic region. In 2013, Sly Fox became the first brewery in North America to utilize the 360 can end, developed by Crown Cork, where the can’s entire lid is removable (we wrote a story about that can once).

With an eye to the future once again, the Pottstown-based brewery will unveil new branding for its entire lineup of core brands and seasonal beers, including a modern update on their playful Sly Fox logo (below). This new look accurately represents what Sly Fox does best: telling the outdoor enthusiast’s tale through the lens of fresh beer. The stylish “Y” in the word “Sly” depicts a bushy fox tail, emblematic of the red and gray foxes indigenous to the wild backwoods of Pennsylvania, and the words “Brewing Company” reinforce their reputation as one of the pioneering leaders of the craft beer movement.

Sly Fox began the slow rollout of new packaging in the month of November beginning with the release of their widely popular Christmas Ale, a malty, full-bodied red ale made with traditional mulling spices: ginger, clove, allspice, cinnamon and nutmeg, in 12-ounce cans. Other packaging updates and label redesigns on the horizon include label redesigns on their two most popular brands: Helles Golden Lager, a Bavarian-style golden lager; and Pikeland Pils, a Northern German-style pilsner.

In early 2018, Sly Fox will debut a new seasonal offering in 12-ounce cans: Mudlust, an invigorating coffee porter that harnesses the power and spirit of morning coffee, then marries those rich flavors with the roasted malt magic of a robustly crafted porter. Later in 2018, Sly Fox will debut a new year-round offering in 12-ounce cans: Vulpulin IPA, a mythical fox-like ale, aggressively hopped with Citra, Mosaic, Cascade and Centennial — an ode to the Pennsylvania red fox, as well as Sly Fox founder Dr. John Giannopoulos’ favorite phrase: Let us proceed with vigor! Vulpulin IPA will be the first new year-round offerings added to their lineup since 2014.

“Vulpulin IPA was born from our popular Hop Project, an experimental series that showcases some of our very favorite hops,” said Brewmaster Brian O’Reilly. “This ever-evolving series has been in existence since 2004, and each batch singles out a different and distinct hop flavor. Due to overwhelming demand, we thought it was finally time for one of these incredible beers to join the regular lineup.”

In addition, Sly Fox has expanded their outdoor patio space in Pottstown with additional seating and a small stage for live music. Starting in May, the brewery will host a Wednesday Night Music Series allowing both aspiring local artists and established acts to perform. Adjacent to the Tastin’ Room, they have installed a fun, nine-hole Disc Golf Course that will remain open year-round for both professionals and novices alike, with complimentary access to flying discs.
