San Francisco’s Fort Point Beer moves from self-distribution to partner with Matagrano Inc.

January 14, 2021Chris Crowell

Fort Point Beer Co.

Fort Point Beer Co. in San Francisco has sold its distribution rights to Matagrano Inc. in San Francisco, San Mateo, and Santa Clara counties. Together they will leverage Matagrano’s large and reputable distribution capabilities to continue to grow the Fort Point brand throughout the region. This change marks a departure from Fort Point self-distributing their own products which allowed them to grow rapidly in the last seven years.

“Self-distribution enabled us to successfully launch Fort Point in our hometown of San Francisco, and we are very proud of what we were able to achieve ourselves. These next steps with Matagrano are a natural and obvious evolution in our growth,” said Justin Catalana, co-founder and CEO of Fort Point Beer Company. “This is a partnership that has been discussed with the Matagrano family for almost two years—in taking a step back and looking into the new year, the timing felt right. There is still so much opportunity for Fort Point in the San Francisco Bay Area, and we look forward to realizing that potential with Matagrano.”

Fort Point grew its self-distribution to 370,000 cases annually in the Bay Area alone in its first seven years. The company started partnering with distributors throughout California in 2018 to grow their distribution footprint and make their beer available statewide. The addition of Matagrano to their network of distributors is a step towards Fort Point fully divesting from self-distribution—a move which will allow them to focus on brand and product development, as well as launching new markets.
