Craft Beer, The Next Generation: Stone collaborates with Star Trek star Wil Wheaton

March 26, 2013Jason Morgan

Stone Brewing Co. is taking craft beer where it has never gone before, thanks to a collaboration with Star Trek: The Next Generation alum Wil Wheaton. The Stone Blog reported that Wheaton, you may remember him as Wesley Crusher, is an avid homebrewer, friend of Stone co-founder Greg Koch and supporter of all things Stone. Along with fellow friend Drew Curtis, Fark.com founder, the collaboration will take place on April 3 on a to-be-announced beer.

In Star Trek: The Next Generation, Wil Wheaton’s Wesley Crusher always performed at the top of his class. Hopefully, Wheaton will bring his extraordinary brewing intellect and knowledge of Romulan Ale to his collaboration with Stone Brewing Co.

Stone often brews collaboration beers — most recently its Dayman coffee IPA creation with Aleman and Two Brothers. Working together with other creative minds fits nicely into Stone Brewing Co.’s mantra of craft beer camaraderie.

“At Stone Brewing Co. we are always looking to develop relationships with brewers who approach the business like we do,” explained Mitch Steele, Stone Brewing Co. brewmaster. “Collaborating with other breweries allows us to experiment with new ingredients or try brewing a new style of beer that we might not have tried otherwise. The craft beer industry is about celebrating the art of brewing beer and collaborating with other brewers allows us the opportunity to really come together for the greater good of our industry.”

Stone’s focus is squarely on its year-round craft beer offering, and it doesn’t mess around with seasonal releases. Instead, the collaboration beers allow the brewers to flex their creative beer muscles and get involved with others in the industry.

“We handle [collaboration beers] like all our beer releases, but collaborations are just a bit more time consuming because you are working with collaborators to determine the beer we want to brew, the ingredients we’ll use and a time we can all get together to brew,” Steele said.

Craft Brewing Business will keep you updated as this particular out-of-this-world collaboration comes rolling in.
