Watch: Cleveland’s Great Lakes Brewing salutes third shift with new video

February 26, 2020Keith Gribbins

Third shifts don’t get the appreciation they deserve. I worked third shift as basically a janitor in a shady Cincinnati hypermarket called Bigg’s for about a year. My favorite part of the gig? Solitude. It’s the exact same answer given in the video above by Ric Gilliam, plant shift supervisor, who works third shift at Great Lakes Brewing Co. It’s one of a handful of moments that made me smile in this quick two-minute-ish video that honors the Great Lakes Brewing night shift, who help produce beer like Conway’s Irish Ale and Great Lakes IPA for hardworking every men just like them.

Of course, the job doesn’t look all that lonely really. Great Lakes Brewing’s third shift looks like a fun crew.

“I want to say that third shift is not recognized enough,” says Laneil Connell, third shift bottle detail, in the video. “Some people probably don’t think Great Lakes got a third shift. They’re probably like, how they make all that beer? They probably like, first and second shift, but we do have a third shift, and third shift, yeah, we can definitely get down.”

Third shift is always full of characters, and this video is a cool homage to those who work late at the brewery. It also has some nice images of the packaging hall scored to some smooth jazzy beats.
