MobileCanningSystems LLC announced results for its first full year of operations. With nine MobileCanningSystems Affiliates launching operations over the course of the year, 2013 ended with 57 breweries across the country using their services to package 101 different labels, and deliver a total of 2.6 million cans to craft beer consumers. MobileCanningSystems’ Affiliate’s deliver fast, reliable production canning services to craft breweries using a Wild Goose Canning Technologies WGC-250 canning line modified for mobility.
The most recent affiliate launches were Mobile West Canning, based in San Diego in December and Mobile Can Man, based in Trumansburg, N.Y., in January, which brings the program to a nationwide community of 11 professional mobile canning operations, with four more scheduled to launch by April 2014.
MobileCanningSystems has also upgraded its can sleeving operation in Colorado to an automated system that increases speed and capacity by a factor of 10. During 2013, almost 940,000 cans were sleeved with over 50 labels that were filled for 26 breweries nationwide. This labeling option offers a lower volume point of entry to canning production than the high minimum purchase required for pre-printed cans, as well as a great approach for packaging small or premium batches and one time brews for special occasions or events. MobileCanningSystems Affiliates’ service can include the provision of sleeved cans and all necessary packaging materials, eliminating the need for brewers to invest in large purchases of packaging inventory that far exceed their production needs and in-house storage capacity.
“When we launched the MobileCanningSystems Affiliate Program we had conservatively projected seven operations in place by the end of 2013,” said Pat Hartman, MobileCanningSystems co-founder and managing partner. “With 11 already launched and four more commencing operations by April, we have certainly validated our perception of the level of demand from craft brewers for this service. Equally importantly, we have also proven the effectiveness of our focus on ensuring quality production canning with our approach of equipping affiliates with structured training and comprehensive operational and business support to launch quickly and successfully.”
MobileCanning Colorado, the original mobile canning operation, will take delivery of an additional canning line in late February to meet demand from the ever-growing number of craft brewers in its home state. Old Dominion Mobile Canning, based in Ashland, Va., the first affiliate to launch outside of Colorado, has also experienced high demand for its services and will be expanding capacity with a second canning line during the summer of 2014.
Iron Heart Canning, based in Norwalk, Conn., Midwest Mobile Canning, based in Chicago and Mobile West Canning have all extended their original territories of operation into adjacent states and will be deploying additional canning lines in the near future to add capacity and support these larger geographic areas. “As the first MobileCanningSystems Affiliate to launch, I was essentially the guinea pig for the program,” said Mike Horn, Old Dominion Mobile Canning founder. “With the thoroughness of training and documentation, as well as the ongoing support provided, I was able to be fully operational from the first day back in Virginia with my equipment and began delivering quality, efficient service immediately.”
Building on its foundational first year, 2014 will be one of high growth for the program. MobileCanningSystems Affiliates are projecting the addition of as many as 124 new breweries, for a total of 181 and 230 new labels, for a total of 331. Potential volume of cans to be packaged in 2014 is more than 10 million, a fourfold increase.
